Default Nec/Mes

Just wondering about any thoughts anyone had about a Nec/Mes character. I was thinking that it might be good as all spells are debuffs and damages. Any thoughts? i'm new today (though I did play some BWE's).

Thanks.

I'm just starting out a Nec/Mes after playing the reverse for a while. The two work very well together, and you have lots of options to weaken and drain enemies. A favorite technique of mine is Soul Barbs (which injures the opponent for each Hex placed on him), throw lots of Hexes, then use Shatter Delusions to destroy a Hex and cause further damage.

I can't say how effective they are in the endgame, but you should be able to fly through the early game and develop some useful strategies in the process.

Totally, thats almost exactly the same as what im doing wth my Necro/Mesmer, except iv got Ether Feast instead of Shatter Delusions, which means less damage but I can drain peoples energy pools for health at a low cost.

For a Mesmer and Necromancer combo, which do you think is the better primary? I haven't tried either as primary yet myself. Is Soul Reaping better overall than Fast Casting, or vice versa?

I have a 15th level N/Me, and i try to stay fairly ballanced as far as what i am effective against.
Blood: 9 Siphon life, vamp gaze
Domination: 9 backfire, empathy, Energy Burn, Power Leak
Inspiration: 4 Energy Tap (Rez signet)

That may be with a scare pattern for one of the attributes. I find i can usualy take any class one on one, but i'm weak when more than one attack me, hopefully that'll improve when i can finally upgrade to level 15 armor.
Vs. Casters: Backfire (to discourage casting). Than i'll energy burn and energy tap (which should leave you with 80% of you mana). Them being a caster, they have probably hit you with a DoT, and taken 90 hp or so damage from backfire (which makes them want to stop casting, if not they kill themselves on your backfire, rare). Now i Siphon life to keep them hurt and off set any crappy healing they try to use(power leak any monk heals). From here, if they have a melee or ranged secondary class they'll be pelting you with some sort of weapon damage, Empathy quickly puts that to a stop or kills your enemy (21 or so HP per attack). I can usually drop them with a repeat of Energy Burn or a couple Vamp gazes (better than Vamp touch IMO). Now the problem comes if they are smart and have the time to do nothing till your Empathy and or backfire wear off.
VS. Melee: Start off with energy burn (early cause you want to make sure they have some mana). Than hit then with energy tap (they have no energy now hopefully), they get to melee range just as you finish second spell usualy. Next Empathy, with any luck they don't intrupt (a rarety, hopefully no Ad. and no En.to make the attempt). Now they are hurting you, but getting hurt almost as fast. Next Life siphon, to offset some of the damage you are taking. And repeated Vamp. Gaze to finish them. If you see them try to heal themselves, Power Leak (great stoper for W/Mo's).
I have had alot of success with this so far, i have no idea about the end game, but i'm working with the skills i have unlocked. For PvE i use Curses (will in PvP when i get more skills) and the skill Mark of Pain... helps cut down grouped enemys quickly.
BTW, have had some trouble with N/Ws, and some massive damage Rangers (must have had awsome bows). Thanks, I'd apreciate any input.

Why did you leave the mesmer/necro build? I am considering that at this time. It seems faster casting would out weigh the occasional mana points?

Dont even pay attention to fast cast/soul reaping...more then likely you wont use them at all later on when you have more points to dish out. Choose a primary based on which items you want. I chose n/me because I wanted to put my runes into blood. I use life siphon and soon life xfer along with wells and blood ritual. I also put alot of points into domination for backfire/empathy. The rest of my points are into illusion/curses for conj phan and mark of pain. My build is a nice support build for warriors and awesome in pvp if you switch out mark of pain for arcane conundrum. You might want to choose shatter spells, like shatter enhancement to help against monks or w/mo's..or shatter hex to help your team against other necros. Ive found my hardest fights are from w/mo's or w/n's. Later on you will get skills that drain adren..so they wont be a problem.

Personally, I find that Fast Casting and Soul Reaping are both in the "nice, but unimpressive" category. If you have a few extra attribute points and don't know what to use them on, you can toss them into Fast Casting or Reaping, given that attribute refunds are easy to get. But I wouldn't consider either a priority. I would go with Necro primary myself, just because they look cooler, but that's just me.

You lost me when you say what items you want. You mean like the look of my armor, etc?

I guess I am glad you brought this up because I am not sure of runes are either? They can only go on your primary class?

It means do you want armor that increases Necromancer power or Mesmer Power (you wont find mesmer armor with Blood magic +1, and vise versa)

I use the same exact build, but I'm Me/N.

Late game I plan to play with fast casting, blood and Inspiration together. Basically drain them, and drain them fast.

Something like:
Life Siphon - Hex Spell
For 12-22 seconds, target suffers health degeneration of 1-3, and you gain health regeneration of 1-3.

Vampiric Gaze - Spell
Steal 18-52 health from target foe.

Vampiric Touch - Skill
Touch target foe to steal up to 29-65 health.

Barbed Signet - Signet
Sacrifice 10% maximum health. You steal 18-52 health from target foe.

Inspired Enchantment - Spell
Remove an Enchantment from target foe and gain 3-13 Energy. For 20 seconds, Inspired Enchantment is replaced with the Enchantment removed from target foe.

Spirit of Failure - Hex Spell
For 30 seconds, target foe has a 25% chance to miss with attacks. You gain 1-4 Energy for each miss.

Inspired Hex - Spell
Remove a Hex from target ally and gain 3-13 Energy. For 20 seconds, Inspired Hex is replaced by the Hex that was removed.

I'm not sure if it would work, but I can't wait to play with a build like that. For pvp that is.
